They Are Who We Thought They Were

As I was watching the game, I was thinking, "Oh boy, I'm really going to have to eat that prediction I made. The defense is outstanding. The Colts can't gain two yards. Payton Manning can't throw anything more than five yards downfield. We even got a couple lucky turnovers. We're running all over the place. So what if we can't score touchdowns? So what if the Colts got one lucky deep play and cut the lead in half. Their kicker missed a chip shot 30 yard field goal! As soon as Longwell makes it 6-for-6, the defense will just dig in and - "

Oops. Nevermind. These are the Vikings we're talking about here.

So then, as the Colts marched downfield to win the game (as though there was any doubt), I was depressed. The team is doomed. The quarterback is awful. The coach is incompetent. The defense is good, but you can't get a shutout every week in the NFL, so eventually you have to score touchdowns.

But there's hope, I decided. This team will be awful. But then Childress and Jackson will be gone. Maybe Bill Cowher will be interested, or Mike Holmgren. Maybe we can find the next Mike Tomlin (and hire him as the head coach this time). Plus, we'll get a top draft pick.

As an amusing sidenote:

ESPN's coach approval ratings. Not only is Childress dead last, with a sub-Bush rating (6%!!), he also has received more ratings than any other coach. Yes, all 31 other coaches. Vikings fans want Childress out more than any other team's fans have any opinion about their coach.

Steelers fans love Mike Tomlin? Not as much as we hate Childress.

Titans fans love Jeff Fisher? Not as much as we hate Childress.

Mike McCarthy in Green Bay? Bill Belichick? Nope and nope.

Kansas City (Herm Edwards), St. Louis (Scott Linehan), and Cincinnati (Marvin Lewis) are all in much worse shape and have much worse teams...and their vote totals don't even add up to Childress'.

I guess that makes sense, though. No one was expecting the Rams to win more than 3 games anyway.

Ah, what a life that would be. No hopes waiting to be crushed.
